This scene made me come out to my mother...

I was sitting at home watching this film, Desperate Living by John waters, Id seen it a bunch of times and loved it. This scene was playing and I of course was laughing. My mother, being a heterosexual, did not get it. Straight people cant comprehend camp because theyre "in it" and its about them from the perspective of being on the outside looking at them. So she thought this scene was most definitely NOT FUNNY and even more thought it was making fun of her, which it was.... kinda... lovingly. She said to me "David, You dont know what is and what isnt funny." Oooooooooooh, that was it... that was IT!!! I could no longer hold it in. It all came out that night, but come on, she'd known it for my entire life time just never told ME, even though other people were more then willing to scream it at you. Thats the fuck over with it all. Parents act like THEY are the ones that YOU have to tell. It really should be the other way around. Parent should just have the BALLS to say "You know, If youre gay its cool" being that they know from about year TWO on. Trust me... THEY KNOW they just try and spend a lifetime of coercion to try and get you to be otherwise. I mean you cant blame them, theyre not gay, what are they supposed to do? Whats funny is they think they know nothing of gayness except THEY MADE YOU and know you pretty well.... Its actually a non issue.

Love it. What a fabulous way to come out, to a John Waters film.

Okay. But then explain to me why I [a heterosexual woman] find it to be hilarious!

Sue, Its because youre on the outside too. Im not saying ALL heterosexuals of course but MOST of the curse/luxury of blindly living on the inside. and we have the curse/luxury of living outside of it.

"I hate the Supreme Court!"

I love that scene.

Wish I could say this forced me to come out to my own mom, but it was being caught with gay porn and moving out instead!

RE: Straight people who CAN get camp: Mike Meyers, Barry Humphries, Eddie Izzard, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Lloyd Kaufman, Charlie Kaufman, Daniel Waters, Tim Burton (though his storytelling sucks); etc. ...
