Why Sleep No More is not interesting....

Im not sure how many of you know about this play type thing going on in New York where you're supposed to have this interactive experience and explore this "hotel" and have this avant-garde experience and you all wear masks etc... Well ... its not interesting... Why? Lemme tell you. I went into it with high expectations, thats my fault, and its a sure fire way to be disappointed. I went along with two friends of mine. We were quickly separated by the staff which I heard was a good thing so you can explore the space on your own. I was surprised to find that all of us had the same experience which was "This is boring, lets get out of here and get this mask off before it gives me pimples." The space has multiple rooms all decorated like ANTHROPOLOGY went out of business. Dilapidated fake antiques and dreary vignettes left over from an R.E.M video. Shitty taxidermy abounds. As someone who appreciates taxidermy shitty taxidermy is just... FINE. I appreciate it, but its also sorta like "Oh this is cheap shit they can't sell at the auction". The staff breaks you up into groups and you're free to explore on your own or follow a group. The concept of following some actor doing interpretive dance was insulting to me as an alpha type personality. Im not interested in FOLLOWING. It actually makes me feel like a loser. I don't wanna shuffle around some place, watch an under paid actor/dancer twirl in moody fashion, with a bunch of KOREAN TOURISTS and STRAIGHT PEOPLE. I appreciate the effort with the decorating but there was a lot of religious iconography which is always a SNORE to me aesthetically and feels like PANDERING. The first actor we saw was a guy doing interpretive dance, and when I say "interpretive dance" what you're thinking is EXACTLY what I saw. That twirly rag doll gesture of banging your fist on your chest quickly twice and then dramatically stretching your arm out, fingers extended... REAL DEEP SHIT YA KNOW....... That got the "OH NO ITS NOT THIS IS IT?:(" eye roll from me. People say the event is interactive but its NOT, and that whats boring about it. Its ONE SIDED. After about ten minutes of exploring and nothing "giving back" I thought "Why am I wasting my time in this space?" Its not like you're finding clues, nothing is responsive or interactive, you can't talk, they don't talk to you. It just feels like a big waste of time AND its dirty and WARM. You don't wanna touch anything because you know its all been touched by 47 thousand people ahead of you so why bother. I think if your house isn't full of BETTER WEIRD STUFF and your friends aren't BETTER WEIRDOS then it might be interesting but to me it was not an interesting environment. I wouldn't say Im jaded, Id say I understand that this is for the masses and the masses don't do/make weird stuff for a living so for THEM its IMMERSIVE and BIZARRE but for anyone creative it just feels like third year art school (I originally typed second but thought that might be TOO TWATTY) very well executed. After about 45 minutes I was totally over it and headed back to the bar which was the starting point to wait for my friends to leave only to find them WAITING THERE FOR ME ALREADY!?! ... If you work in an office this is fierce and Im not gonna judge you or it. I know a lot of work went into it and it serves a great purpose for many. Its a good thing, just not for me. If you work in the arts or vanities I think you'd be bored.

Don't worry, you managed to sound plenty twatty without saying second year art school!

Ohmygods! I did the EXACT same thing! In fact, I had a blast at the bar with the live band. The rest of it... Felt like I was in a haunted house with no ghosts. Plus, I'm a bit offended that to get the "true experience" and "full story" you have to go like 10 times. 10 x $75 = extortion.

Gah! I left a comment and it deleted it! (stoopid Blogger) Anyways, as I said before...

Ohmygods! I said the exact same thing after I went to SNM. In fact, I kinda had a good time at the bar with the live music. But the whole thing made me feel like I was in a haunted house with no ghosts (spare me the "you are the ghosts"). Plus, I'm a bit offended that to get the "full experience" and "whole story" you have to go like 10 times. 10 x $75 = ripoff. Fuck that. Boring.

I don't mind twatty if it's true and I trust your assessment/review is right on the money.

I thought is was cute, not horrible or blow-minding It was one-sided yes, but I kinda liked feeling like a ghost. as with you I chose not to follow anyone and found the actors less interesting then the scenery, unless they were all out masturbating or having sex!!. I got a kick out of realizing that it was in the same building as the old Spirit nightclub used to be--from one Hot mesopotamia to another!
