Rupauls Drag Race Season 6 Episode 3

I apologize for the delay in a review! I was on a plane when the episode aired and then I had my 2013 taxes to do but the review was my first priority outside of not going to jail for nonpayment of taxes!
Ok, So we all knew Vivacious was going home. We all hated her for LYING and saying she was "the last of NYC clubland children" and likening herself to Leigh Bowery but LOOKING LIKE A POINTER SISTER and now I think I feel bad:(
You see I think Vivacious actually held herself together pretty well and showed some class when her teammates all said she had to go, which was revealed in Untucked, and they were right she really did need to go. Vivacious is the drag dinosaur who didnt evolve. Her heavy handed looks and heavier applied make up read as "craft" and the worst part of it was that she didnt seem to realize this. See her concept of herself was her own undoing. She called herself the last of the legendary club children, AND SHE WAS. In her mind shes the LAST of her kind. What she never realized was that everyone else didnt disappear, THEY EVOLVED! The looks have evolved since 1994?! This refusal of progress make me wonder about Vivs mind and life situation, and in this curiosity I surprisingly find some sympathy. Its easy to say "Her looks are terrible?!" but she cant be completely unaware. Why cant she be present? Did something happen in her life that traumatized her and she is NOT GOING TO MOVE FORWARD?-(Go ahead an laugh but its super common and super real and Im willing to bet in some aspect of your life youre doing it yourself, I am) Did she just hop on to a scene and it gave her an identity and so she STUCK WITH IT but simultaneously didnt really get it so she couldnt forecast the direction it was going? Was she just financially incapable of buying new looks? Is she just really uncreative?
After watching this episode I thought something about Viv and Im not sure if it makes sense but I think you'll agree that it does in fact make sense. Vivacious doesnt have a library of references to pull from creatively. She doesnt subscribe to National Geographic BECAUSE SHE IS NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC! Meaning she isnt on the outside looking in. She is on the inside and is unaware that there even is an outside. Shes living in the "raw", in QUEENS. In her world she is OVER THE FUCKING TOP, in her world Paris is a hard place to get to. Its a very OLDE WORLDE way of living. In her world she values tradition over trend. I can respect that, it seems a little third world to me but its also a respectful way of perceiving things so Im not gonna hate on her. She seemed liked a nicer person in a room full of queens that seem HIGHLY TEDIOUS. Is she a better person than most of these queens, I think so, do I want her on my team, not so much.
As far as the rest of the episode goes I have to say it wasnt my favorite. There was ZIPPO humor. The acting challenge was sort of hard to watch. They always do this lesbian humor, and I hate lesbos as much as the next gay, but I just dont find it funny. It just seems like making fun of gays to me. I wish they would sorta get beyond that in the acting challenges and theyre always putting it in there and Im sitting there going THIS WASNT FUNNY THE FIRST TIME?! Also has anyone else noticed the WEIRD EDITING? The editing is OFF. Like why are we watching Laganja, who I just now realized was a pot reference even after seeing her premiere outfit A DOY (Laganja at the premiere of her revue at Chilis), comment on this episode in an outfit she supposedly was wearing in the first episode???? Now that im on to critiquing the actual show itself can I mention WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH UNTUCKED?! I think they have a new person doing it and they arent so great. Why are we watching them sticking their hands in boxes for no apparent reason touching gross things? You can tell the queens themselves are just going along with it like we are except they cant yell WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS THIRD GRADE BULLSHIT AND WHY ARE YOU WASTING MY TIME?! What the fuck was that?! It totally made me want to change the channel, it had nothing to do with anything and insulted me. Do you think Im that stupid?! Dear RPDR please dont insult me with half-assed sleep over stunts which pertain to nothing and just make me think "they have nothing else to show", the show is FAR FAR FAR better and smarter and more important than that! The "big pink furry box" was never that funny and it needs to take a backseat.
I didnt even get the runway theme/challenge? My bf and I were sitting there going "whats the theme? whats the point?" Ive actually always thought the final runway scene should be more like a proper "ball walk" and needs to be given much more focus, importance, and theme, otherwise its just some random runway scenario that we've seen a million times. The theme should be made very clear, the importance of the event should be highlighted, and I think it should be scored. Despite not knowing what any of the looks had to do with one another I thought the looks were the best yet. Milks look was in my top 5 ever. Courtney looked beautifully correct despite wearing a BORROWED DRESS from Dallas Dellaforce... Im assuming. If youre unaware of who Dallas Dellaforce is find her online because shes as good as it gets. Shes got the severity of Deetox with the beauty of Courtney. I WISH shed go on the show but she thinks shes beyond it which she is... SORTA, shes basically unknown in the US and if she did it shed not only win but become global and Dallas would be a household name but who knows.. no queen has ever wanted that, so why be different.
Can we all just point and laugh at the asian girl whos name I forgot already. Her padding was the worst ever, she had the hips of someone six foot three and shes three foot six?! If she wasnt mean I wouldnt be honest about her, its called American courtesy. I learned it from my Russian friend. I think Trinity looked a bit classic in her gown but also perfect and in that genre it was a solid 10 and despite pagaent looks being boring to seasoned gays not every queen can pull it off and she did it in a way that made it seem less low brow despite the entire concept being low brow. I think Trinity is very under estimated because shes young and not educated but I think she seems cool and I like her looks and voice. Stock in Bianca is down this episode as I think the stunt shes pulling of being terse and verbally aggressive to shake up the younger prettier queens is working on the younger prettier queens themselves, but to the audience its just spotlighting her insecurities and letting us know she actually is threatened by them and does think theyre prettier. Lucky for her the younger girls dont have the wisdom to know that. That said Bianca is also RIGHT.

Courtney's borrowed Dallas gown was a big deal on FB a couple months back when the show trailer came out. But apparently Dallas made Courtney her own version. The neckline is different between the two. It is still, and will always be recognized as, a Dallas original!

After watching Micelle's exit interview "What You Packing" with Viv, I am more sympathetic and see what her POV was coming from. But her Godzilla drag had no feminine shape or sexiness or real irony. It looked like a Local Gay Theatre costume here in Michigan ( sorry Ferndale) saying, I am starring in the new revival of the musical Taboo by Boy George.
But she survived this long so her ego can take it. Good for the old gal. As far as tradition as surviving from Club Kid era.. Applause to Lady Bunny . And I remember Ru Paul from being in the old Gay Rag, Native New Yorker. Mr. Mason you are a true culture critic and teacher even to old dogs like me.

David, I LIVE for your RPDR reviews! I know --Sad, but TRUE.

Your eulogy to Vivacious was exceedingly gallant. As someone old enough to recall the Club Kid Era, I was also a tad skeptical of Vi's self-acclaimed credentials. But you are a better person for tipping your sage hat to the old girl, rather than raking her further over the coals. Karma points. I have to say I felt bad for her when 'the apes threw her under the bus' because she looked so dejected. I secretly hoped she had another fierce outfit under her Godzilla ensemble, but with her track record with zippers I guess that wouldn't turn out so well?

Another reason to give Trinity another look, because at least she anticipated being in the bottom, right? (And Missy PREPARED with a Lip-synch For Your Life outfit under that gorg, if not old-school ensemble).

Thanks for steering your readers toward Dallas! I hope she takes your advice.

That's so funny you didn't get LaGangia's name joke/reference. I got it immediately and found it obvious/not funny. Just like all of the young queens. Does that make me old? I guess.

So glad you have a BF and his chest hair whorls are EXCEPTIONAL, hunty!

Signed,
Your biggest fan,
Jack

I think Vivacious went to the club a few times towards the end of the Club Kid Era or perhaps came across Project X Magazine some queens left behind at the late night diner she was working at back in the day. I think it took her a few years to save the coins and courage to get that vinyl from JoAnns Fabric and another decade to make the outfit and set her "look and character". I think she WANTED to be a club kid in the early 90's and she just showed up 20 years too late and hopes no one realizes she wasn't there. Unfortunately some of us either were there and remember or we have a rolodex of references to KNOW she was never there. She is a common person dressing up for a "Party Monster" themed birthday party that she wasn't even invited to.

I don't like vivacious either, I think she's one of those people who think rough around the edges means edgy. I understand your point of view on how she's sort of stuck in time... her whole persona now makes more sense from that perspective... still, her body language and all, seems a little bit unelegant to say the least, lack of subtlety in general is kinda unnerving to me.
I knew I would like laganja, the first time I heard of her I thought "there's no chance a stupid queen would choose that name", and so far, I find her just divine, a little bitchy sometimes, but it's fun to watch her reactions. I was surprised at trinity, I actually saw how beautiful she is, it's just that she takes things too seriously and sometimes seems to lack a sense of humour because of that. Humour that bianca does have, but overall... her reactions seem a little bitter sometimes. her observations are SPOT ON, but still, her reactions to certain comments are kinda sour-face... I find mysel thinking "girl, c'mon". Courtney's dress is a total ripoff... jawdrop.
I don't like gia that much, she seems to be a good mug with a crappy attitude and not much more than that.

you are right about the show in general, I've been sensing that in some episodes of last season too, it's like they have to have gimmicky situations instead of having them talk about interesting stuff, because they all must have intersting shit to talk about or discuss...
The theme was "best drag", apparently. don't ask me why they pulled out that in the third episode... I do believe it was a filler sort of challenge too. the script sucked... wasn't really funny, the editing threw vivacious under the bus like no one ever was. I don't see why a small person is funny... is part of mainstream entertainment to force-impose stereotypes as funny when they are not and crude to say the least?... wasn't that over with yara sofia's afgani-charo? or coco's hurricane katrina "joke"? I just don't believe Ru finds those things THAT funny. Adore is annoying, she's sorta convinced she's funnier than she is and I want her to go after gia, but I fear she will be kept longer than that.

I agree, the untucked pink boxes full of crap segment was a waste of my time.

First of all, David, I AM your biggest fan!

That said, I think you are totally right about Vivacious. Maybe she was fierce back in the day but the judges, like you, realized that she did not evolve into the 21st century. Oh, the runway theme? "Your Best Drag" and I think the judges were thinking "If this is the best V. has to offer, time for her to go home."

Didn't like the pink boxes either. Don't hate on Gia Gunn. Yes, her runway looks are lacking but she's fierce and smarter than everyone thinks -- except Ru. Ru knows whats up!

The editing is sort of strange this season. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. My friends are just like, "You look too much into things" The editor needs to be spoken to or fired. The concept to the runway was "Best Drag" ...that was sad to know that after seeing the way Vivacious, Adore, Bianca, Joslyn Fox and Darienne Lake. I could sit and describe why but I simply don't have the patience to.

As for the shows spiral downward and concentrating on the Furry Pink Box, I'm over it. There's better things they can throw in there. I hope the realize that soon ;)

& I love Dallas!! I said the same about the dress. Courtney needs to step it up!

...waiting for episode 4..

This has nothing to do with Drag Race but you have to look at the drag queens at this spanish competition. Ther costumes are over the top. The gay boy band who do flagging toward the end is AMAZING!
